Course Report

The East Course hosted the World Cup of Golf twice and was part of a Rockefeller resort project using former coconut and grapefruit plantation land.

About

TPC Dorado Beach East Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and restored by his son, Jr., is a premier seaside layout repeatedly ranked best in Puerto Rico. Noted for panoramic ocean views, challenging winds, fast Champion Bermuda greens, and a memorable, player-friendly routing, it combines classic design with modern appeal on a tropical coastline.

Caddie Tip

Wind direction and strength are critical—carrying bunkers on downwind holes or clubbing up substantially on exposed seaside greens. The par-5 fourth rewards bold play but only with precise shot placement; beware water hazards on both layup and approach. Rely on local caddies for detailed reads on the speedy Champion Bermuda greens.

The Main Challenge

The course’s main challenge is the persistent Caribbean wind, which affects club selection and ball flight on nearly every hole. Strategic bunkering and water hazards, especially on signature risk-reward holes, test shot planning. Fast Champion Bermuda greens require precise putting and careful approach play to avoid over-shooting.

The Good

Golfers rave about the dramatic ocean views visible from twelve holes, fast and true Champion Bermuda greens, and the strategic diversity brought by shifting Caribbean trade winds. The routing offers memorable holes, especially along the coast, blending the feel of both championship and resort-style golf at a luxury property.

The Not So Good

While overall maintenance is excellent, some recent complaints concern inconsistent bunkering and drainage after heavy rain. The price point is also higher than other Puerto Rican courses, but most agree the value and experience justify the expense. Some golfers wish caddie requirements and fees were clearer at booking.
