Course Report

Tradition Golf Club was built on the site of the historic Hacienda del Gato estate, a retreat frequented by Hollywood stars and U.S. presidents in the mid-20th century, with original estate gates still standing near the third hole.

About

Tradition Golf Club in La Quinta, California, is an exclusive private club designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay, debuting in 1997. Set at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains, its 18-hole layout features strategic routing through lush fairways, elevation changes, and views of the desert landscape. Tradition’s course blends classic desert golf with an elevated member experience in a low-density, luxury environment.

Caddie Tip

Conservative play off several tees is recommended, especially on the elevated 17th where the tee shot can easily run through the fairway. The rapid changes in elevation on the back nine require strict club selection and careful reading of fast, sloping greens. Favor the low side on approaches and bring extra focus for downhill putts.

The Main Challenge

The course’s biggest test comes from its undulating, lightning-fast Bermuda greens and elevation shifts, particularly on the back nine. Strategic bunkering, risk-reward short par fours, and demanding approach angles challenge both physical and mental aspects of the game—especially in desert winds. Accurate distance control and steady nerves are required throughout a round.

The Good

Golfers praise Tradition for its dramatic mountain setting, serene desert landscaping, and the seamless integration of natural elevation into the design. Many favor the back nine for its climbs into the foothills, panoramic views, and memorable finish. The welcoming, small-membership community and standout clubhouse amenities further elevate enjoyment.

The Not So Good

Players sometimes wish for greater accessibility or member events during summer, when intense heat limits play. Several mention the narrow corridors along some fairways and the effects of homes lining certain holes detracting from the sense of natural seclusion found on other desert layouts. Practice area space can be at a premium during busy periods.

17

The par 4, 17th hole is Tradition’s signature, featuring a dramatic drop of over 200 feet from the elevated tee to the fairway, with panoramic mountain views framing every shot. The elevated perspective and natural desert setting create one of the most photographed holes in the Coachella Valley and a thrilling short par four demanding accuracy on both tee and approach.

A newly renovated clubhouse offers a luxe mix of casual and formal dining, cocktail lounges, fitness and wellness facilities, locker rooms, and social areas with outdoor terraces overlooking the course and mountains. Events, member gatherings, and personalized service are hallmarks.
