Course Report
Vista Vallarta’s Nicklaus Course hosted the 2002 EMC World Cup and is the site where Phil Mickelson set the course record with a 62.
About
Vista Vallarta’s Nicklaus Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 2001, features dramatic elevation changes and lush native vegetation with panoramic views of Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay. The layout offers challenging play with wide fairways, natural creeks, and bold green complexes, ranking it among Mexico’s most notable courses.
Caddie Tip
Take a caddie if available—they can help read the subtle breaks on the undulating Bermuda greens and provide local knowledge, especially regarding wind direction and club selection on the dramatic elevation changes. Play conservatively on the long par 4s and aggressive on the reachable par 5s for the best chance at a strong score.
The Main Challenge
Vista Vallarta Nicklaus Course punishes errant tee shots with dense trees, creeks, and challenging bunkers. Several long par 4s and risk-reward par 5s test even experienced golfers. Subtle, undulating greens demand precise approach shots and confident putting. Elevation changes and prevailing winds further complicate club selection and strategy.
The Good
Golfers widely praise the breathtaking elevated vistas of Banderas Bay and the Sierra Madre Mountains, as well as the dramatic variety of holes with significant elevation changes and natural hazards. The wide but challenging fairways, lush conditions, and attentive staff combine to create a memorable and highly enjoyable round for visitors and locals alike.
The Not So Good
While course conditions are strong, guests sometimes mention high green fees and resort-level pricing, particularly for visiting golfers. Pace of play can fluctuate during peak tourist season and some feel the course could benefit from additional on-course amenities or easier access for non-resort guests.
Signature Hole:
#
12
Hole 12, a stunning par 5, is recognized as the signature hole for its breathtaking descent from an elevated tee, providing dramatic views over the native landscape. The hole requires a precise tee shot and a strategic approach to a green protected by bunkers and water, demanding both power and finesse to score well.
Clubhouse
Modern clubhouse with casual dining, locker rooms, golf shop, rental equipment, and space for tournaments or outings. The restaurant serves local and international cuisine, and panoramic windows provide sweeping views over the course and city.
Practice Facilities
Extensive practice area with grass tees, a driving range, large chipping and putting greens, and bunkers for short game work. Facilities are well-maintained and ideal for pre-round warm-ups or lessons, accommodating both high- and low-handicap players.
