Course Report
Francis Ouimet, the 1913 U.S. Open Champion, was the first person to tee off at Waterville Country Club when it opened in 1916.
About
Waterville Country Club is a classic Maine golf destination dating back to 1916, featuring 18 holes routed over rolling terrain just outside Oakland. Originally developed by local founders and later expanded by Geoffrey Cornish, with previous influence from Orrin E. Smith, it offers bentgrass playing surfaces and hosts frequent state and regional championships. The course is recognized for its challenging layout and scenic Maine setting.
Caddie Tip
Many greens have subtle breaks and approach shots from below the pin can make putting much easier. Keep drives straight, as mature trees and bunkers can block approach routes. Club selection on par threes is critical with swirling Maine winds. Play conservative on the tighter holes, and leave uphill putts whenever possible.
The Main Challenge
Waterville Country Club tests accuracy off the tee, as mature trees line many holes and penalize errant shots. The greens are quick and feature subtle undulations, placing a premium on approach shot placement and putting touch. Water hazards and strategically placed bunkers are in play on several holes, requiring careful shot planning.
The Good
Golfers consistently praise Waterville Country Club for its excellent course conditions and consistent greens. The layout is enjoyable for a wide range of abilities, combining challenging holes with playability and friendly staff. The scenic rolling terrain and peaceful Maine setting make for a tranquil and memorable round that many return to season after season.
The Not So Good
Some players mention that the course can feel crowded during peak summer weekends, affecting pace of play. A few have noted areas where rough or certain bunkers could use added maintenance attention. Improved signage and greater variety in practice facility targets are also occasionally requested.
