Course Report

Waverley is the second-oldest golf course in Oregon and hosts an annual Hickory Open, celebrating the game’s vintage traditions and historic roots.

About

Waverley Country Club is Oregon’s oldest private 18-hole course, established in 1896 and beautifully routed along the Willamette River in Portland. Redesigned in 1912 by the noted Olmsted Brothers, the course blends classic architecture with mature trees, strategic bunkering, and challenging, well-kept greens. Known for its rich tradition, walkability, and exceptional service, it’s a standout among Pacific Northwest private clubs.

Caddie Tip

Keep your ball below the hole on approach shots—Waverley’s greens feature fast speeds and challenging, severe breaks. The tree lines may look forgiving from the tee, but stray shots can lead to blocked approaches and awkward recoveries, especially on the back nine. Play safe and respect the swirling winds that sometimes come off the river.

The Main Challenge

Waverley’s greatest challenge comes from its fast, contoured greens and deep bunkering. Recovery from the dense tree line or the rough can be tricky, while several holes near the Willamette River demand accuracy. Strategic placement off the tee and smart approach shots are necessary to score well, especially as wind and pin positions can change daily.

The Good

Golfers praise Waverley’s classic design, historic aura, and beautiful riverfront setting most. The layout is strategic, enjoyable for all skill levels, and offers memorable stretches with varied shot values. The service and atmosphere create a welcoming club environment that makes every round feel special, blending tradition with subtle modern touches.

The Not So Good

The primary complaints center around the occasional soggy conditions in early spring and late fall, especially in low-lying fairways near the river. Some also wish for faster play during peak member tournament times. A few look for more food and beverage options after hours or around the turn.

The par 4 16th hole at Waverley Country Club plays along the banks of the Willamette River, doglegging gently with mature trees framing both sides. Approach shots must be struck with precision to a green flanked by deep bunkers and subtle undulations, making it both scenic and a demanding test for golfers at a key point in the round.

Clubhouse

The large classic clubhouse provides fine and casual dining, a full bar, historic trophy displays, locker rooms, and event spaces with river views. Additional amenities include tennis courts, a pool, fitness rooms, and a pro shop offering personalized service and high-end equipment.
