Course Report

The course's original nine holes were designed by George Wright and later revised by the legendary Donald Ross, with Geoffrey Cornish completing the back nine in the 1960s.

About

Wentworth by the Sea Country Club, established in 1897 in scenic Rye, New Hampshire, boasts an 18-hole layout originally designed by George Wright and later shaped by Donald Ross, with further expansion by Geoffrey Cornish. Overlooking the Atlantic and Little Harbor, this classic New England club provides a challenging, wind-swept “Scottish links” style experience and first-class member amenities.

Caddie Tip

Winds off the ocean play a major role here. Club selection is tricky on almost every approach, especially when playing toward the water. The course rewards smart angles and well-controlled ball flights—bring your best iron play and err on the safe side if wind gusts pick up.

The Main Challenge

The course’s greatest challenge comes from ever-present ocean winds, which change direction quickly and make club selection difficult, especially on exposed holes. The bunkering is strategic, greens are well-protected, and several approach shots demand precision to avoid water or fescue-lined runoffs.

The Good

Golfers consistently praise the panoramic ocean views and the unique seaside links character, which blend classic New England charm with a true test of shot-making. The setting is tranquil, with the sound of waves and passing boats adding to the relaxing but invigorating experience on every round.

The Not So Good

Some players comment that the turf conditions can be inconsistent early or late in the shoulder season due to New Hampshire’s challenging spring and fall weather. Others mention that the course’s moderate length means longer hitters might occasionally find holes less demanding off the tee.
