About

Strantz would often ride on horseback to study the topography of his sites, using the experience to inspire his 'functional artwork' approach to golf course design.

Mike Strantz was an acclaimed golf course architect whose innovative and artistic approach earned him a reputation as one of the leading designers in the modern era of American golf. Born in Toledo, Ohio, Strantz graduated from Michigan State University in 1978 with a degree in Turfgrass Management. He began his career at the Inverness Club, which led to an influential relationship with Tom Fazio and years refining his craft as an on-site designer and shaper. Strantz’s solo career began with the design of Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, which opened in 1994 and quickly gained recognition for creativity and Lowcountry charm. He later designed True Blue, Tobacco Road, and Wild Dunes, with all of his courses consistently ranked among the top 100 best modern American courses. Known for melding art and strategic golf design, Strantz earned accolades such as 'Architect of the Year' from Golf World and was named one of the top ten golf architects of all time by Golfweek. Tragically, he died from cancer in 2005, but his legacy endures through every course he created.
