Course Report
True Blue was built on the site of a former indigo and rice plantation and is a frequent mainstay in 'Top 100 Public Courses' lists, reflecting both its architectural pedigree and playability.
About
True Blue Golf Club, designed by Mike Strantz, is a visually striking public course set among South Carolina Lowcountry marshes, live oaks, and pines. Renowned for its bold, wide fairways and massive, undulating greens, the course challenges all skill levels with creative design and memorable shot values. An 18-acre practice facility and welcoming clubhouse complement this top-ranked destination.
Caddie Tip
Focusing on smart course management is key—aim for safe angles off the tee and consider laying back to your favorite yardage rather than always attacking pins. The greens are large and heavily contoured; leave approach shots under the hole for easier putts and avoid being short-sided.
The Main Challenge
The bold use of native waste bunkers, water hazards, and undulating greens place a premium on strategic shot placement. The opening stretch is especially challenging, with two par 5s and a tough par 3 requiring accuracy from the start. Risk-reward options tempt aggressive play but can quickly lead to tough recoveries.
The Good
Golfers rave about the strategic fun, massive undulating greens, and memorable visuals that characterize every hole. The Mike Strantz layout ensures that no two holes feel alike, rewarding creativity and strategic play, especially evident in the sprawling fairways, bunkering, and water features throughout.
The Not So Good
Some golfers find that conditions can vary with periods of wetness leading to cart path only rules, which lengthens rounds. Certain stretches can get slow during peak times, and the occasionally fuzzy greens can affect putting consistency, especially in spring. More walkability would improve the player experience given the bold terrain.
Signature Hole:
#
4
The par-4 fourth hole at True Blue is visually intimidating with water running along the entire left side and a huge waste bunker framing the right. The tee shot demands a precise carry and a good angle into a green protected by water and sand. Approach placement is critical for both safety and scoring.
Clubhouse
Full-service clubhouse includes a grill room with hearty breakfast and lunch offerings, pro shop with a wide selection of merchandise, locker rooms, and spacious patio seating overlooking the course. Banquet facilities are available for group events or tournaments.
Practice Facilities
The course features an 18-acre modern practice facility with a full driving range, short game area, and large practice putting green. Complimentary range balls are included with play. Instructors offer lessons, and the range is suitable for both warm-up and serious practice.
