About

Sven Tumba is credited with designing the first golf course in the former Soviet Union—just a 10-minute drive from Red Square in Moscow.

Sven Tumba was one of Sweden’s most influential golf ambassadors and course architects, playing a pivotal role in transforming golf into a popular sport in Sweden. Initially a successful ice hockey and football player, Tumba took up golf in his 30s and quickly excelled, achieving a scratch handicap by age 39 and winning major amateur tournaments. He turned professional and represented Sweden at the World Cup, but his greater impact came through popularizing golf: organizing tournaments, giving exhibition clinics, and founding the Scandinavian Enterprise Open, which became a premier stop on the European Tour. Tumba designed several golf courses, including the first in the former Soviet Union and Sweden’s first indoor driving range, and introduced golf to children by founding Sweden's major junior tournament. Recognized for making golf accessible to a wide public, he received every major Swedish golf honor and was named the most influential person in Swedish golf history during the federation’s centennial.
