Course Report

The club commissioned Henrik Stenson Golf Design for a major revamp, drawing inspiration from Le National and TPC Sawgrass, aiming to become one of Scandinavia’s top golf destinations.

About

Designed by Sven Tumba and Jan Sederholm, the Västerled Course at Österåkers Golf Club is a championship-level, parkland-style layout known for its undulating terrain, deep bunkers, and water hazards. The course has hosted multiple prestigious Swedish and international tournaments and offers varied challenges for all skill levels.

Caddie Tip

Play conservatively off the tee on the par-5s, especially the 1st and 18th, as water and deep rough line the fairways. Approach shots often favor the right side to avoid well-placed bunkers. On windy days, club up for most par-3s and account for elevation drops.

The Main Challenge

The toughest aspect is managing the demanding stretches among the woodland valleys, where water hazards, deep bunkers, and elevated greens place a premium on accuracy and course management. Holes 1 and 7 stand out for penal rough and strategic hazards.

The Good

Golfers enjoy the diversity of holes, with several routed through picturesque Swedish woodland valleys and water features. The conditions are typically excellent, with fast greens, strategic bunkering, and scenic natural surroundings, making for a visually pleasing and memorable round.

The Not So Good

Players suggest bunker maintenance could be improved, especially after rain, and slower play on busy summer weekends is a recurring frustration. Some also comment that signage can be limited for newcomers unfamiliar with the two-course routing.
