Course Report
Agawam Hunt Club partners with The Nature Conservancy to maintain environmentally friendly turf practices, preserving both native habitat and playability for golfers.
About
Agawam Hunt Club is a private, historic 18-hole course in Rumford, Rhode Island, originally established in 1895 by Willie Park Jr. and redesigned by Donald Ross in 1920. Recent restorative work by Gil Hanse aims to recapture Ross’s strategic vision. The course features rolling hills, mature trees, and a walkable layout admired for both its challenge and approachability.
Caddie Tip
Greens have subtle contours and speed up in the afternoon, so focus on staying below the hole and aiming approaches to the fat side of the green. Play conservatively off the tee on shorter par 4s, and prepare for wind that swirls through the mature trees on the back nine.
The Main Challenge
The most challenging aspect of Agawam Hunt is negotiating its small, undulating greens and strategic bunkering, especially under windy conditions. Players must manage their approach shots carefully and execute precise short-game shots to avoid bogeys, particularly during the crucial finishing holes.
The Good
Golfers love Agawam Hunt Club for its classic Donald Ross design, which rewards thoughtful shotmaking and provides excellent variety throughout the round. The walkable, rolling terrain and traditional architecture make each round memorable, offering a blend of challenge and enjoyment for members of all skill levels.
The Not So Good
Some golfers have noted that certain bunkers and rough areas could use more consistent maintenance, and occasional slow play can be a challenge during busy periods. Club improvements are ongoing as part of a long-range master plan, aiming to further enhance turf quality and drainage.
Signature Hole:
#
18

The closing stretch is memorable for its risk-reward options and the picturesque views across the property’s mature landscape.
Clubhouse
Agawam Hunt Club features a historic clubhouse with dining facilities, event space, locker rooms, and a pro shop. Members enjoy access to tennis, paddle, and swimming amenities, as well as social events and private function spaces in a classic New England setting.
Practice Facilities
