Course Report
Oarai Golf Club is renowned for hosting several top national championships and for its unique seaside holes that closely resemble links courses found in the UK.
About
Oarai Golf Club is a prestigious seaside layout in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, founded in 1953. Boasting challenging holes overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the course is admired for its length and natural setting. Designed with links characteristics, Oarai is known for its strong winds and memorable finishing holes. It is highly regarded in Japan’s golf scene.
Caddie Tip
Be prepared for variable and at times strong winds off the Pacific—aim conservatively and stay below the hole on fast greens. Approach shots should favor the center of greens, as coastal breezes make club selection difficult, especially on exposed holes such as 17 and 18.
The Main Challenge
The greatest challenge comes from the course’s coastal exposure, subjecting players to ever-changing winds, especially on the long finishing holes. Tight fairways, native rough, and fast, undulating greens require precise ball striking and thoughtful strategy throughout the round.
The Good
Golfers most love the authentic links-feel of Oarai, highlighted by stunning Pacific Ocean views from many holes, combined with the challenge presented by coastal winds. The club’s history, exclusivity, and pure focus on golf further enhance its appeal for passionate players seeking a classic experience.
The Not So Good
Access is strictly limited to members and guests, and advance booking is difficult for visitors. Some players find the greens exceptionally firm and fast, making short-game play challenging for those not accustomed to such conditions. The coastal wind can also frustrate higher handicaps.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The 18th hole is a par 4 finishing beside the Pacific Ocean, frequently played into a strong headwind. A demanding tee shot must stay in play amidst the coastal breezes, setting up a challenging approach to a well-guarded green. The ocean views and strategic demands make it a favorite among visitors and members.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse offers a relaxing traditional atmosphere with a full-service restaurant, locker rooms, lounge, and pro shop. Amenities are high-quality but understated, matching the club’s old-school, private character.
Practice Facilities
A complete practice range and putting green are available, maintained to a high standard. The range accommodates a full warm-up, while the putting green closely mirrors course conditions. There is no short-game area for specialty shots.
