Course Report

Golfers at Akureyri can tee off at midnight in June, thanks to nearly 24 hours of daylight during the Arctic Open, making it one of the few courses in the world where golfers can play under the midnight sun.

About

Akureyri Golf Club, founded in 1935, is Iceland’s second oldest club and home to the world’s northernmost 18-hole course. Designed and shaped by Magnus Gudmundsson and recently renovated by Edwin Roald, Jaðarsvöllur winds through ridges and rock outcrops, offering panoramic mountain and fjord views. Hosts the renowned Arctic Open and features strong practice and clubhouse amenities.

Caddie Tip

Due to the open, uneven terrain and exposure, play for extra club against prevailing winds and beware that elevation changes can exaggerate distances. Greens are subtle and typically firm; favor bump-and-run over high approaches. Use local knowledge for reading putts and sightlines, especially on blind or uphill shots.

The Main Challenge

The greatest test is managing the ever-present wind, which can quickly elevate difficulty on exposed holes. Elevated tees, undulating fairways, and occasional blind shots put a premium on course management, distance control, and patience. Strategic bunkers and occasional fast, firm greens amplify the challenge.

The Good

Golfers love the setting—unique vistas of the surrounding fjord and mountains, the thrill of nearly 24-hour daylight during midsummer, and the sense of adventure that comes from playing at one of the world’s northernmost courses. Visitors also praise the friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere for international guests.

The Not So Good

Some players comment that course conditioning, especially green quality, can vary due to late-winter damage or the short growing season. Bunkering and drainage occasionally struggle after heavy storms, and ongoing work to modernize some holes and facilities continues to be a priority.
