Course Report
Amana Colonies Golf Club is consistently recognized by Golf Digest and Golf Magazine as one of Iowa’s top public golf courses.
About
Amana Colonies Golf Club is a highly regarded public course in Iowa, nestled across rolling hills and oak forests. Designed by William J. Spear in 1989, it features dramatic elevation changes, meandering streams, and five sets of tees that suit all skill levels. The course is regularly ranked among Iowa's best and provides a pure, scenic golf experience.
Caddie Tip
Avoid the temptation to over-attack pins—many greens are well-guarded by bunkers or slopes. Factor in elevation changes on approaches, and keep tee shots in the fairway to avoid punishing rough or trees. Playing smart from the correct set of tees is crucial for scoring well here.
The Main Challenge
The biggest challenge comes from the elevation changes and strategically placed trees that require accuracy both off the tee and on approach shots. Greens are undulating and well-defended, while fairways frequently demand thoughtful club selection due to swirling winds and sloping lies.
The Good
Golfers rave about the natural beauty, dramatic elevation changes, and woodland scenery that make each hole unique. The course’s routing through mature hardwoods and across rolling hills creates spectacular vistas and an immersive golf experience not often found in the Midwest.
The Not So Good
Some players wish for faster greens and better bunker consistency in wet conditions. The rough can be very penal if not properly maintained, and the walk between some holes, due to elevation changes, can be especially demanding for those on foot.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The 18th hole at Amana Colonies Golf Club is a par 4 finishing hole that challenges players with a demanding tee shot framed by mature trees and elevation changes. Its approach shot requires precision as you play toward a green protected by subtle undulation and bunkering, providing a dramatic and memorable finale.
Clubhouse
New clubhouse offers a stocked golf shop, full-service bar and grill, on-site restaurant, locker rooms, and event spaces. Modern facilities provide a comfortable environment for players before or after their round.
Practice Facilities
The club provides a driving range with views over the river valley, a large putting green, and short game areas. Guests can take lessons with teaching pros, and rental clubs are available for visitors. The facility encourages golfers to warm up before their round.
