Course Report
Back Creek has frequently been cited as one of Delaware's best public golf experiences and is known locally for its welcoming environment for golfers and event guests alike.
About
Back Creek Golf Club, designed by Allen Liddicoat and David Horne, is an 18-hole public course located in Middletown, Delaware. Opened in 1997, the course is known for its challenging layout and scenic fairways, catering to players of all skill levels. The club features a well-equipped driving range, practice facilities, and a popular clubhouse and restaurant.
Caddie Tip
Accuracy is rewarded more than pure distance here—keep tee shots in play rather than trying to cut off corners. The greens are well protected, so take an extra moment to select the right club for approaches, especially when pin hunting. Play conservatively on windy days.
The Main Challenge
The toughest aspect of Back Creek is its combination of wind exposure and deep greenside bunkers, particularly on approach shots. The layout demands accuracy with long irons and precise putting on fast, undulating greens, and punishes errant tee shots.
The Good
Golfers praise the variety and challenge offered on the course, especially how each hole presents a different test without feeling repetitive. The social atmosphere after the round at the Grille and the friendliness of the staff add to the overall positive experience.
The Not So Good
Some players have noted inconsistent turf quality on certain holes during busy periods or after harsh weather. Improved maintenance on bunkers and tee boxes, as well as better drainage in wet seasons, are often requested by regulars.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The 18th hole, a par 4, finishes in full view of the clubhouse and offers a demanding conclusion with a risk-reward tee shot and an approach guarded by bunkers. Its scenic green and hazard placement make it memorable for both challenge and drama to close the round.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse features a full-service restaurant and grille, event spaces for private functions, and modern locker rooms. Outdoor seating and scenic views of the final holes provide an inviting setting to relax after a round.
Practice Facilities
Back Creek offers a well-equipped driving range, putting and short game practice areas. Range balls are available, and the facilities are often uncrowded, making them ideal for pre-round warmup or extended practice sessions.
