Course Report

Ballyneal was constructed without formal plans, relying on ‘eyes-on-the-ground’ shaping by Tom Doak and his minimalist team, using the existing dunes as the foundation for every hole.

About

Ballyneal Golf Club, designed by Tom Doak and opened in 2006, lies in the high plains near Holyoke, Colorado. Revered for its authentic, wind-swept inland links style, the private club offers a rugged, minimalist design inspired by the legendary courses of Scotland and Ireland, with natural contours and strategic variety throughout its acclaimed layout.

Caddie Tip

Focus on angles of approach: firm, fast fairways reward imaginative shotmaking, and the wind often dictates your line. Stay below the hole on approach shots, as the greens are large and feature significant slopes. Don’t be afraid to play shots along the ground, especially when the wind is up.

The Main Challenge

The biggest challenge at Ballyneal is navigating the ever-present wind and embracing uneven lies on the wild, rumpled fairways. Greens are large, fast, and slopey, demanding precise short game skills. Strategic thinking and creativity are required on every approach, and recovery shots from deep bunkers or sandy waste areas test even advanced players.

The Good

Golfers rave about the pure, unspoiled links experience—large, rolling greens, wide fairways, and the sense of adventure that comes from every hole’s unique character. The isolation and peaceful prairie setting make each round immersive and memorable, enhanced by the camaraderie and relaxed vibe of a true destination club.

The Not So Good

Access and exclusivity can make arranging a round challenging even for golf aficionados. Some guests describe the on-site lodging as basic compared to other private destination clubs, and the remote location requires careful travel planning. Expanded practice areas or enhanced guest amenities could further elevate the experience.

Clubhouse
