Course Report
This was Clive Clark’s first U.S. golf course design, and it is regularly included in Golf Digest’s Top 100 Greatest Public Courses.
About
Belgrade Lakes Golf Club, designed by Clive Clark and established in 1998, offers an award-winning 18-hole layout known for its challenging play and immaculate presentation amidst rustic woodlands and panoramic hills in central Maine. Frequently ranked among America's top public courses, it delivers country club service with friendly Maine hospitality and is highly regarded for scenery and overall experience.
Caddie Tip
Club selection is critical due to elevation changes and well-defended greens. Favor aiming for the middle of greens instead of flag hunting – the undulating putting surfaces and numerous bunkers can quickly turn an aggressive approach into a costly mistake. Be mindful of prevailing winds, especially on the hilltop holes.
The Main Challenge
Belgrade Lakes Golf Club challenges golfers with significant elevation changes, forced carries, and well-bunkered, undulating greens. Many holes are bordered by tall Maine forest, putting a premium on accuracy both off the tee and on approaches. The demanding closing stretch tests concentration and shotmaking under pressure.
The Good
Golfers rave about the sweeping views over the surrounding lakes and hills, as well as the thoughtfully routed holes that use the natural terrain to full advantage. The friendly staff, tranquil setting, and the feeling of seclusion make it a memorable Maine golf destination for visitors of all skill levels.
The Not So Good
Bunker maintenance and green speeds are common complaints; some golfers mention the sand quality could be improved and greens sometimes run slower than expected for a premium destination. Price-to-value perception varies, with some visitors believing the experience should more consistently reflect the premium green fee.
