Course Report
Black Desert features a 36-hole illuminated putting course, allowing day or night play, and is Utah’s first resort course to host a PGA Tour event in more than 60 years.
About
Black Desert Resort Golf Course in Ivins, Utah, is a Tom Weiskopf and Phil Smith-designed par-72 layout framed by dramatic black lava rock formations native to the region. Opened in 2023, the course features wide fairways, strategic risk/reward options, and pristine conditions. The property offers a cutting-edge practice facility, 36-hole illuminated putting course, and stunning desert backdrops for a premium golf experience.
Caddie Tip
Conservative tee shots are often rewarded due to the expansiveness of desert penalty areas off the fairways. Pay close attention to the wind, as it shifts across the open landscape and black lava can produce tricky bounces. On the greens, reads can be subtle—aim outside the obvious break, especially late in the day when surfaces speed up.
The Main Challenge
Navigating the windswept fairways and avoiding the dramatic black lava fields is the greatest test at Black Desert. The course challenges players with risk/reward decisions, especially on the two drivable par 4s, and the contrast between lush turf and harsh lava sculpts demanding visuals for every shot, especially as greens firm up in afternoon sun.
The Good
Most golfers praise the unique visual drama of the black lava rock contrasted with lush fairways and fast greens. The expansive width offers plenty of playability for higher handicappers, while strategic bunkering and drivable par 4s provide constant interest and challenge for skilled players. Views of the surrounding red rock and mountains make every round highly scenic.
The Not So Good
Players commonly note the limited on-course restroom access, especially before hole 11, and suggest that sand in the bunkers can be heavy and inconsistent. Some find the shared use large putting green confusing and would prefer clearer separation from the putting course. Continued development of amenities as the resort grows is desired.
Signature Hole:
#
5
The par-4 5th hole is a drivable par 4, set dramatically amid black lava rock. This memorable hole embodies Weiskopf’s strategic design, inviting players to attempt the green from the tee. It requires precision to avoid the lava outcroppings and bunkers that guard the landing areas and green, demanding an aggressive but calculated approach.
Clubhouse
The evolving clubhouse features ample food and beverage options with complimentary snacks and drinks (excluding alcohol) at multiple on-course stations. Guests receive custom tee gifts, enjoy attentive service, and are supported by professional CaddieMaster forecaddies. Further enhancements and full-scale amenities are planned as the property progresses.
Practice Facilities
Black Desert offers a state-of-the-art driving range equipped with Trackman technology at every bay, a spacious chipping and bunker area, and two separate putting greens—one of which doubles as an 18-hole putting course. There’s also an illuminated 36-hole putting green for night play.
