Course Report
The course hosted the inaugural Walker Cup in 1922 and again in 2013, but has never hosted a men’s major championship despite its legendary stature.
About
National Golf Links of America is an elite private links-style course in Southampton, New York, designed by Charles B. Macdonald with engineering by Seth Raynor. Established in 1908, it incorporates classic design elements inspired by historic British courses and offers world-class architecture, challenging play, and iconic holes along Peconic Bay.
Caddie Tip
Trust your yardages and pay attention to wind direction. Play for position off the tee, as many holes reward angles over length. Study the contours and undulations on approach shots—putting and chipping require imagination, especially on the famed Redan and Eden greens.
The Main Challenge
The routing tests every aspect of your game using classic template hole strategies. Firm, fast greens, dramatic bunkering, and deceptive wind off the bay require sound decision-making. The course’s true challenge is managing approaches—many greens are elevated or guarded, putting a premium on accuracy and creative short game recovery.
The Good
The design and strategic variety are widely acclaimed, with each hole presenting a unique challenge and referencing a celebrated original from the British Isles. The atmosphere is one of understated prestige, and the vistas over Peconic Bay combined with world-class architecture make every round feel special.
The Not So Good
Membership exclusivity and limited playing opportunities mean few golfers get to experience the course. Some guests note the strictness of tradition and club policies can feel intimidating to outsiders. Navigating the tricky green contours can be especially daunting for first-time visitors.
Signature Hole:
#
4
The par 3 4th hole, known as 'Redan,' is an iconic template modeled after North Berwick's famous original. With a sloping green guarded by bunkers front and back, precise shotmaking and distance control are essential. This hole exemplifies Macdonald’s philosophy of strategic design and is revered as one of the purest Redan templates in America.
Clubhouse
The historic clubhouse offers refined dining, classic locker rooms, and a warm library lounge. Service is old-school, with a focus on tradition and hospitality rather than flash. No spa or resort-style extras; experience is anchored in golf and club fraternity.
Practice Facilities
The club provides a traditional driving range, putting green, and dedicated short game areas. All facilities are impeccably maintained but emphasize understated, classic surroundings instead of modern resort flair. Expect a focus on quality practice rather than expansive amenities.
