Course Report
The course, once known as The Bull, hosts Monday Qualifiers for the Barbasol Championship, a PGA Tour event.
About
Boone's Trace National Golf Club, designed by David Pfaff in 1999, features 18 holes surrounded by high bluffs along the Kentucky River. Known for its Bentgrass fairways and greens, the course delivers scenic views, strategic challenges, and an enjoyable layout suitable for various skill levels. The club is recognized as one of Central Kentucky’s most affordable and well-maintained courses.
Caddie Tip
Conservative play off the tee is often rewarded—favor position over distance to manage the elevation changes and sloping fairways. Pay special attention to the often-fast Bentgrass greens, as approach shots can release quickly if not well-positioned below the hole.
The Main Challenge
The course's greatest challenge is navigating the rolling terrain and changes in elevation, especially around the Kentucky River bluffs. Several tee shots require careful placement to avoid trouble, while undulating greens and deep bunkers punish errant approaches. The dramatic landscape creates memorable, difficult finishing holes.
The Good
Golfers love the dramatic scenery provided by holes on the bluffs overlooking the Kentucky River and the consistently well-conditioned Bentgrass greens. The friendly staff and overall welcoming atmosphere add to the enjoyment, making it a local favorite and a repeat play for many in Central Kentucky.
The Not So Good
Some golfers mention the rough can be overly penal in spots, and pace of play can slow during peak weekend periods. At times, certain spots can suffer drainage issues after heavy rain, affecting fairway firmness until conditions recover.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The 18th hole features a challenging finish with dramatic elevation changes, tree-lined fairways, and a green protected by bunkers. Playing as a par 4, it demands an accurate drive followed by a precise approach. The hole showcases the natural beauty of the high bluffs overlooking the Kentucky River, making it a memorable closing experience for all golfers.
Clubhouse
The recently renovated clubhouse offers chef-inspired dining, a well-stocked pro shop, locker rooms, event spaces, and friendly service. Guests frequently praise the inviting atmosphere, attentive staff, and high-quality food and beverage options offered in the clubhouse lounge.
Practice Facilities
Players benefit from an ample practice range, a dedicated pitching and chipping area, and a putting green. The club offers instructional lessons from its staff teaching pro. These facilities cater well to players looking to warm up before rounds or improve their game post-round.
