Course Report

Cambrian Ridge was named the third best new public course in America by Golf Digest when it opened and hosts the RTJ Trail’s annual Father/Son Championship.

About

Cambrian Ridge, part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, features three 9-hole championship nines and a 9-hole Short Course in picturesque Greenville, Alabama. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., it is renowned for dramatic elevation changes, challenging play, and immaculately maintained Ultradwarf Bermuda greens. A multi-year renovation completed in 2016 has elevated both playability and aesthetics.

Caddie Tip

Focus on smart club selection off the tee—many holes offer risk-reward options, but local knowledge favors precision over power. Elevation changes create deceptive yardages, so trust your rangefinder and aim for the correct tier on the contoured greens. On approaches, always account for the speed and slope of Ultradwarf Bermuda surfaces.

The Main Challenge

The most formidable aspect of Cambrian Ridge is its rolling terrain—steep elevation changes create challenging lies, while many holes demand accurate placement to avoid trouble. Water hazards, deep bunkering, and large, undulating greens test both tee shots and approaches, rewarding precise shotmaking and penalizing wayward play.

The Good

Golfers rave about Cambrian Ridge's dramatic elevation changes and stunning lake vistas, with several postcard-worthy holes. The absence of homes along the fairways provides a peaceful, natural experience. The design offers a memorable test for players of every skill level, earning high praise for both challenge and beauty.

The Not So Good

Some visiting golfers note that the course's severe elevation changes can be tough on walkers, and pace of play can occasionally slow on busy weekends. Others wish for more frequent on-course GPS or wayfinding aids due to the complex routing between nines.

Signature Hole:

#

9

The 9th hole on the Sherling nine is a spectacular par 4 that features a dramatic downhill tee shot with panoramic views of Sherling Lake. The hole challenges players to find the right angle off the tee and navigate a well-protected green, making it both visually stunning and strategically demanding.

Clubhouse

No items found.

Expect a modern clubhouse with a full-service pro shop, restaurant, men’s and women’s locker rooms, showers, private event spaces, and friendly staff. The facility is well-equipped for both individuals and groups, making visitors feel welcome whether playing one nine, all 27 holes, or the Short Course.
