Course Report

Chena Bend is the northernmost 18-hole golf course in the U.S. and is located alongside the Chena River, with several holes directly bordering the water.

About

Chena Bend Golf Course is a scenic, tree-lined 18-hole parkland-style course on Fort Wainwright, Fairbanks, Alaska. Designed by Jerry Matthews, the layout offers a mix of open and wooded holes with river views. Managed by the U.S. Army MWR, it welcomes civilians and features a reputation for solid conditions and affordable green fees during the short Alaska season.

Caddie Tip

Fairways are generally generous, but focus on keeping your ball in play as tree-lined holes can penalize errant shots. The greens tend to run on the slower side, especially during cooler stretches. Take advantage of wide landing areas and avoid river boundaries, especially on the finishing holes.

The Main Challenge

The most challenging aspect of Chena Bend is maintaining concentration on the tree-lined holes near the river, where trouble lurks for wayward shots. Long par 5s and several doglegs can also test players’ shot-making and strategy, especially when conditions are breezy.

The Good

Golfers love the unique Alaska setting, with views of the Chena River and a tranquil, uncrowded feel. The friendly staff, well-maintained fairways, and affordable rates also earn consistent praise, making it a favorite for locals and military personnel alike.

The Not So Good

The most common complaint is slow play, especially on busy days when there is no active course marshal. Occasional temporary greens and ongoing course maintenance during the short playing season can also affect the overall experience.
