Course Report
Colonial Country Club was the first course in Texas to feature bentgrass greens, a rarity for the southern climate, thanks to founder Marvin Leonard’s visionary commitment.
About
Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas is an iconic championship course originally designed by John Bredemus and Perry Maxwell with input from founder Marvin Leonard. Renowned for its strategic layout and bentgrass greens, it has hosted the PGA TOUR’s annual Charles Schwab Challenge since 1946, making it a beloved venue steeped in tradition and golfing history.
Caddie Tip
Club selection is critical throughout the round, especially on approach shots, as many greens are small, well-protected, and run firm. Pay close attention to pin positions and the grain on bentgrass for putting. On signature holes, take less club to avoid long rough and be wary of swirling valley winds.
The Main Challenge
The most difficult aspect of Colonial is its demand for ball control and precision; tight, tree-lined fairways and small, strategic greens test every part of your game. Errant drives are often punished by thick rough and overhanging oaks, while approach shots require exacting distance and spin to hold fast greens.
The Good
Golfers love Colonial’s firm, fast bentgrass greens and its heritage as a tournament venue with a classic, tree-lined parkland routing. The risk-reward element on many holes and immaculate course conditioning deliver a memorable experience, particularly for those who appreciate shot-making and championship traditions.
The Not So Good
The course’s tightly packed layout and surrounding development can make it feel constrained, particularly during busy play and tournament preparations. Some members note consistent rough and tree overgrowth can pinch fairways, leading to slow pace of play and less strategic variety on certain holes.
Signature Hole:
#
13
The 13th hole is a par 3 famous for its scenic carry over water to a narrow, well-bunkered green set against a wooded backdrop. Known for punishing missed shots, it demands a precise mid- to long-iron and is a focal point during tournament play, rewarding only the most accurate approaches.
Clubhouse
The spacious clubhouse features several dining options, banquet rooms, full-sized locker rooms, and panoramic views of the course and Fort Worth skyline. Members also enjoy a modern fitness center, pool complex, extensive tennis and pickleball facilities, and a well-stocked pro shop.
Practice Facilities
Colonial offers a double-ended driving range, two dedicated short-game practice areas, and a large putting green. The facilities were recently renovated and are maintained to professional standards, providing members and guests ample opportunity to refine all aspects of their game before tee time.
