Course Report

The front nine of the course was designed by famed architect Donald Ross, making Crotched Mountain one of the few public-access Ross layouts in New Hampshire.

About

Crotched Mountain Golf Club is an 18-hole public course in Francestown, New Hampshire, renowned for its scenic setting in the Monadnock region and classic Donald Ross front nine. Featuring mature tree-lined fairways, strategic bunkering, and strong variety, this course offers a true New England golf experience with picturesque views and well-maintained conditions ideal for players of all skill levels.

Caddie Tip

Course management is key—stay below the hole on the sharply contoured greens, and pay careful attention to club selection on the approach shots, especially when wind comes down the slopes. Many fairways are tree-lined, so favor the center and avoid aggressive angles unless you are familiar with local bounces.

The Main Challenge

The toughest challenge is the relentless importance of accuracy due to mature, tree-lined fairways and elevated green surrounds. Many greens are sloped and quick, requiring precision iron play and deft putting. Errant tee shots can find the trees quickly, and recovery is not always easy on this classic-style New England layout.

The Good

Golfers rave about the course's mountain setting and spectacular fall foliage, as well as the authentic Donald Ross green complexes and the peaceful, secluded feeling. The blend of history, natural beauty, and consistent conditioning make it a favorite among both locals and visitors seeking a true New England golf experience.

The Not So Good

Some players note that sections of the rough can be patchy or inconsistent, and a few narrow fairways can be overly punishing for higher handicaps. Management may want to refresh on-course signage and consider more frequent maintenance on bunker sand quality to further improve playability.
