Course Report
Dom Pedro Old Course was among the first in the world to receive ISO 14001 environmental certification for sustainable golf course management.
About
Dom Pedro Old Course, designed by Frank Pennink, is one of the most iconic courses in Portugal. Opened in 1969 and set among mature pine trees, it is renowned for its challenging parkland layout and consistent conditioning. Renovated in 1997, the course blends classic design with modern playability, offering a premier golf experience in the Algarve.
Caddie Tip
Save your driver for select holes—many fairways are lined with mature pines. On the par-3 4th, opt for one more club than the yardage measures to account for wind above the trees. Focus on lag putting, as large greens have subtle undulation throughout.
The Main Challenge
The toughest test on the Old Course is demanding accuracy on tight, tree-lined fairways where wayward drives are heavily penalized. Small landing zones and strategically bunkered greens reward conservative strategy, while occasional wind shifts force shot-making adjustments throughout the round.
The Good
Golfers consistently praise the strategic routing through towering pine trees and classic parkland setting. The tranquil natural surroundings and meticulous maintenance give the course a timeless charm, while the varied hole design provides both challenge for experienced players and enjoyment for casual golfers.
The Not So Good
Some visitors mention slower pace of play during peak months, particularly in high season. There can also be occasional wear spots in high-traffic areas near greens. A few guests suggest more shaded rest stops and enhanced on-course signage to improve navigation.
Signature Hole:
#
4
The 4th hole, a par 3 stretching over 200 yards, is considered the signature hole of Dom Pedro Old Course. Players must carry a water hazard to a well-guarded green framed by soaring pines, where swirling breezes test club selection. Precision and nerve are essential to score well on this iconic hole.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse features upgraded locker rooms, a refined gastropub serving local and international cuisine, a carefully curated pro shop, and shaded terraces with panoramic course views. Guests enjoy personalized service, modern comforts, and a relaxed yet elegant atmosphere before and after their round.
Practice Facilities
Facilities include a full driving range, short game area, putting green, and dedicated chipping zone. PGA instruction, club and trolley rental, and on-site equipment fitting are also available, making the facility suitable for warm-up or skill improvement before play.
