Course Report
Edgewood Golf Course is situated at the base of the Berkshires, providing elevated views and an ever-present breeze that can change shot strategy multiple times a round.
About
Edgewood Golf Course, designed by Geoffrey Cornish in 1963, is a public 18-hole, par-71 layout set on rolling converted farmland outside Southwick. The course features contrasting nines—an open, forgiving front and a wooded, scenic back—with challenging greens and moderate length. Well-maintained fairways, driving range, and active leagues make it a favorite among locals and visitors alike.
Caddie Tip
The front nine offers scoring opportunities, but be wary of the undulating greens—they break more than they appear, especially on downhill putts. Back nine tee shots require precise positioning, as the tree lines tighten and punish misses left or right. Conservative approaches yield the best scores.
The Main Challenge
Edgewood's most demanding stretches feature several long par 4s on the back nine, with uneven lies from rolling fairways and greens featuring subtle undulations. Water hazards and guarded greens add further complexity, rewarding patient course management and precise putting.
The Good
Golfers frequently praise the fast, true rolling Bentgrass greens, which are kept in excellent condition even during dry seasons. The back nine's peaceful, wooded setting and consistent breezes provide a memorable experience, while the welcoming atmosphere and good value keep groups returning year after year.
The Not So Good
Players commonly note that the tee boxes, particularly on the back nine, often lack grass coverage and require attention. Some fairways can be patchy with brown areas during drought conditions, and the clubhouse food and beverage options have been inconsistent in the past, though there has recently been reported improvement.
Signature Hole:
#
12
The 12th hole is a striking par 3 framed by mature trees, with a green guarded by bunkers front left and right. The shot demands precision, as swirling winds at the base of the Berkshires add challenge to club selection. Its scenic setting and tough green make it the most memorable par 3 on the course.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse includes a pro shop, locker rooms, banquet space, a bar, and a restaurant—though service hours may vary due to local demand. The staff is noted for their friendliness, and the facility serves as a gathering point for leagues and post-round meals.
Practice Facilities
Features a driving range, chipping and pitching area, and large putting green. Instruction is available through a teaching pro, and the practice area is well maintained, offering plenty of space to warm up before your round or practice short game fundamentals.
