Course Report

Elkhorn Ridge Golf Club sits on a portion of the historic Frawley Ranch, a National Historic Landmark, providing a unique blend of golf and Wild West history.

About

Elkhorn Ridge Golf Club is an 18-hole public course in Spearfish, South Dakota, designed by architect Larry W. Flatt and set on the historic Frawley Ranch. Offering a modern layout with dramatic elevation changes and scenic Black Hills views, the course combines thoughtful design with excellent practice facilities, making it a standout destination in the region.

Caddie Tip

Pay close attention to club selection and elevation on the mountain-side front nine, and beware the wind which can swirl unpredictably through the Polo Creek Canyon. Local knowledge says to favor approach shots below the hole, as many greens run away on the edges, making up-and-downs tricky.

The Main Challenge

The most challenging aspect of Elkhorn Ridge is the elevation change and swirling winds, demanding precision in club selection. The greens are subtly contoured and quick, often requiring strategic placement on approaches and disciplined putting. The back nine features holes with significant hazards and risk-reward chances.

The Good

Golfers love the panoramic views over Centennial Valley on the front nine and the thrilling elevation changes. The course receives praise for its immaculate greens, friendly staff, and overall value, making it a repeat favorite for locals and Black Hills visitors alike.

The Not So Good

Some players feel greens can be tough to hold due to firmness and contour, and a minority have cited price for peak times as relatively high for the area. Pace can slow on busy afternoons, and the uphill walks may be challenging for some.

Signature Hole:

Clubhouse

The clubhouse includes a pro shop with a wide range of apparel and equipment, full-service bar and grill, and comfortable seating overlooking the course at The Miller Creek Pub and Patio. Visitors appreciate the welcoming atmosphere and post-round food and beverage options.
