Course Report
The course is recognized as the second oldest country club in Oregon and has hosted multiple USGA and LPGA tournaments, including the NCAA Men’s Championships.
About
Eugene Country Club, established in 1899 and redesigned by Chandler Egan in 1923 with a major update by Robert Trent Jones in 1966, is one of the nation’s premier parkland courses. Set among towering Douglas Firs in Eugene, Oregon, the course is celebrated for its strategic routing, pristine conditions, and natural Pacific Northwest beauty.
Caddie Tip
Eugene Country Club rewards precise play more than raw power. Pay extra attention to club selection on its long par 3s, and be cautious with tee shots: tree-lined fairways can penalize even slight misses. Manage doglegs by playing to the wider parts of fairways and remember that putts tend to break more than they look due to subtle greens.
The Main Challenge
The biggest challenge comes from the narrow, tree-lined fairways and firm, fast greens that require strategic play. Many holes are shaped by towering firs, making shot placement paramount. Water hazards and expertly placed bunkers further test approach accuracy, especially on the demanding par 3s and finish holes.
The Good
Golfers love the towering Douglas Firs and meticulously maintained fairways that create a peaceful, almost reverential experience. The course’s architecture offers varied challenges on every hole, and the tranquil setting, with distinctive Pacific Northwest scenery, leaves a strong impression on both serious players and recreational golfers alike.
The Not So Good
Some players note that Eugene Country Club’s exclusivity and private nature limit access and lead to fewer updates in tee-to-green innovation. The tree density, while beautiful, can create recovery challenges for higher handicaps who may struggle with errant shots and tough lies just off the fairways.
Signature Hole:
#
1
The opening hole, a par 4, is renowned for its ‘cathedral-like’ setting, framed by mature Cedar and Fir trees. Golfers are greeted by a striking scene that establishes the course’s defining character, demanding precise tee shots and rewarding accuracy off the start. The peaceful woodland backdrop makes it memorable for first-time and returning players.
Clubhouse
Amenities include a recently renovated clubhouse with fine and casual dining, men’s and women’s locker rooms, sauna, card rooms, a well-stocked pro shop, and a dedicated event space for social gatherings, tournaments, and banquets. Golfers benefit from attentive service throughout the facility.
Practice Facilities
The club offers a full driving range with a variety of targets, a short game area including greenside bunkers, and multiple putting greens. Practice facilities are close to the clubhouse and main tees, allowing convenient warm-up and post-round practice for members and their guests.
