Course Report
The course was originally built as a corporate retreat for TRW, a major American technology company, before being sold to American Golf Corp and opening to the public.
About
Fowler’s Mill Golf Course, designed by Pete Dye and Roy Dye, offers 27 holes of classic parkland golf on scenic, undulating terrain just east of Cleveland. The Lake and River nines form the championship 18, renowned for strategic routing, mature trees, and water features. Highly ranked by Golfweek, the course is recognized for its pristine conditions, challenging layout, and authentic Pete Dye architectural features.
Caddie Tip
Fowler’s Mill demands careful club selection and precise approach shots, especially on holes with water hazards like the River nine. Play for the center of the greens as Pete Dye’s trademark bunkering and angled greens punish aggressive lines. Tee shots should favor the side away from trouble, as fairway slopes can redirect balls towards hazards.
The Main Challenge
The greatest challenge at Fowler's Mill is navigating its strategic Pete Dye greens complexes and water-laced holes, particularly on the River nine. Sloping fairways and deep bunkers punish misses, while thick woods demand accuracy from the tee. The constantly changing angles require both tactical shotmaking and mental focus throughout the round.
The Good
Golfers consistently praise the memorable Pete Dye design, variety in holes, and the pristine setting with no houses lining the fairways. The Lake and River nines offer clever risk-reward opportunities and scenic holes combining mature woodlands, water, and rolling topography. Many highlight the excellent condition and challenge, marking it as a must-play Cleveland area course.
The Not So Good
Players occasionally note pace of play can be inconsistent on busy days, especially weekends. Wet weather may lead to softer fairways and a few drainage issues. Some suggest additional on-course signage or clearer yardage markers could aid navigation for first-timers.
Signature Hole:
#
7
The 7th hole on the River nine is a picturesque par 4 featuring an elevated tee shot to a fairway bordered by water on the right and trees to the left. The approach requires precision to a green guarded by water, making it both visually striking and a true test of accuracy and nerve. Risk-reward strategy defines this memorable hole.
Clubhouse
The Western Reserve-style clubhouse offers a well-stocked golf shop, Grille Room for dining, and the Pete Dye Room for banquets and events. An outdoor patio overlooks the course. Locker rooms and private function areas are available for tournaments, outings, and weddings.
Practice Facilities
The course provides a full driving range, short game practice area, and a putting green. The range is open to all guests with targets for distance control and turf grass to simulate course conditions. Practice bunkers are also available, making it easy to warm up for all aspects of the round.
