Course Report

Gamble Sands is one of the few true links-style courses in the Pacific Northwest, built entirely on native sand dunes and planted entirely in fine fescue for a pure, firm-and-fast playing experience.

About

Gamble Sands is an acclaimed links-style public golf course in Brewster, Washington, designed by David McLay Kidd. Opened in 2014, it features firm, fast fine fescue terrain, wide-open fairways, large greens, and sweeping views over the Columbia River valley. Regularly ranked in the Top 100 public courses in the U.S., it offers an authentic links experience in a high-desert setting.

Caddie Tip

If it’s your first round, hire a caddie—they’re invaluable for navigating the wide landing areas, helping you choose the right shot lines, and decoding the large, undulating greens. Shots play shorter than they look due to the elevation, and almost every green allows for low, running approaches. When in doubt, aim to the widest part of the fairway and use the ground game.

The Main Challenge

Gamble Sands’ greatest challenge comes from its exposure to wind and the vastness of the undulating terrain. While fairways are generous, effective navigation of the complex green surrounds and precision on approach shots is key. Strategic bunkering and risky lines, especially on downhill par 4s and the long par 3s, test decision-making and ball control.

The Good

Golfers rave about the width of the fairways, the playability for all skill levels, and the authentic links feel set against dramatic, panoramic Columbia River vistas. The firm fescue turf creates variety and creative shotmaking opportunities. The walkable design, quiet rural setting, and welcoming service make for a relaxing, memorable experience.

The Not So Good

Some golfers wish for more varied green complexes, as a few putting surfaces feel similar in contour. During peak heat mid-summer, fairways can get especially firm and fast, occasionally causing unpredictable bounces. Limited shade and minimal on-course restroom/refreshment access can be a downside on hot, breezy days.

Signature Hole:

#

14

No items found.

The par 4 14th hole at Gamble Sands is celebrated for its dramatic elevated tee and stunning vistas over the Columbia River. The hole doglegs left with ample fairway, tempting players to cut the corner for a shorter approach. Strategic bunkering and wispy fescue roughs make both risk and reward off the tee, finishing on a subtly contoured green framed by sweeping landscapes.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The simple yet elegant clubhouse includes a well-stocked pro shop, locker rooms, and multiple dining options such as the Danny Boy Bar & Grill. Lodging is available at the on-site Inn. Mountain and river views enhance the food and beverage experience before or after golf.

Gamble Sands features a full-sized driving range, practice putting greens including an expansive 100,000-square-foot putting course, and a dedicated short game area. The facilities are kept in excellent condition, promoting warm-up or full practice sessions before each round.
