Course Report

The Gary Player Country Club has hosted the Nedbank Golf Challenge, one of Africa's richest golf tournaments, every year since 1981 and has seen many of the world’s top golfers compete.

About

Opened in 1979 and designed by Gary Player with Ron Kirby, this par-72, 18-hole championship course at Sun City is one of the longest in the world. Famous for hosting the Nedbank Golf Challenge, it's renowned for its pristine conditions, strategic design, and bushveld panorama. The walk-only layout offers a tough yet fair test for all skill levels.

Caddie Tip

Trust the local caddies' advice on reading subtle breaks, as putting surfaces are deceptively fast. Avoid left on holes 8 and 13—both punish aggressive play. If going for the 9th green in two, err to the right, as left is water and bunkers. Save energy for the walk, as the course is walking-only and long.

The Main Challenge

The course's length from the tips and demanding rough make it a true test for professionals. Fast bentgrass greens, strategic bunkering, water hazards on key holes, and swirling valley winds further ratchet up the difficulty, especially on finishing holes. The layout rewards precision and stamina over power.

The Good

Golfers consistently praise the course's championship pedigree and immaculate conditioning, noting its strategic layout and the challenge it provides at every hole. The bushveld setting provides memorable wildlife encounters and striking mountain backdrops, enhancing the international tournament atmosphere and making every round feel special.

The Not So Good

The course's strict walking-only policy can be demanding on players unaccustomed to long walks, especially in warmer months. Some golfers wish carts were allowed or that rest stops were more frequent. Given its remote location, accessibility and on-course shade can also be issues during busy or hot stretches.

Signature Hole:

#

9

No items found.

The par-5 9th hole is the course's most celebrated, with its dramatic dogleg around a lake framing a breathtaking approach. The green is closely guarded by water and bunkers, making it a true risk-reward hole for those aiming for eagle or birdie. Strategic shot placement is vital on both the tee and approach.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The clubhouse features upscale dining, a spa, well-appointed locker rooms, a pro shop, lounge areas, and expansive terraces overlooking the finishing holes. Additional resort amenities include a fitness center, pools, and access to all Sun City entertainment, making post-golf relaxation a luxury experience.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

The club provides an extensive range including a full-length driving range, chipping and putting greens, and practice bunkers. The pro shop offers top-tier equipment. Lessons and clinics are available for all levels. Clean locker rooms are staffed, and club rentals and caddies are available for visitors.
