Course Report

Grandfather Golf & Country Club sits at the base of the iconic Grandfather Mountain, one of the highest peaks in the Blue Ridge range.

About

Grandfather Golf and Country Club, designed by Ellis Maples in 1968, is nestled in North Carolina’s spectacular Blue Ridge Mountains. The flagship championship course offers 18 holes routed through dense mountain woodland with isolated fairways, streams, and dramatic elevation changes. Grandfather is consistently ranked among the finest mountain golf courses, celebrated for its challenging play and stunning vistas.

Caddie Tip

Don’t underestimate how mountain air and changing elevations affect club selection. Carefully check yardages, especially on uphill or downhill approaches, and take extra time to read the subtle breaks on these fast, sloping greens. Accuracy off the tee will reward you on several holes protected by natural hazards.

The Main Challenge

The true test of Grandfather is its elevation changes and natural hazards. Small creeks, tricky bunkering, and fast, undulating greens require complete precision—particularly on approaches to plateau greens and during unpredictable mountain winds. The routing means club selection and shot shaping are constantly challenged.

The Good

Golfers praise the tranquil mountain setting, with holes routed through dense trees and along clear streams, offering a secluded and serene playing experience. The breathtaking scenery, especially views of Grandfather Mountain, and the meticulously maintained greens make each round both visually spectacular and memorable for players.

The Not So Good

Some golfers note that the course’s demanding elevation changes and challenging layout can be difficult for walkers and may slow down play. Guests have also mentioned that access is quite limited due to its private status, and securing an invitation to play can be challenging.
