Course Report

Hacienda Pinilla is certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, emphasizing ecological preservation and showcasing Costa Rica’s native wildlife directly on the course.

About

Hacienda Pinilla Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-72 championship course designed by Mike Young, blending tropical forest with Pacific Ocean vistas in Guanacaste. The layout incorporates Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary standards, diverse wildlife, TifEagle greens for exceptional putting, and strategic design across 7,200 yards, making it one of Costa Rica’s premier resort golf destinations.

Caddie Tip

Wind regularly affects club selection, especially on coastal holes like 15; aim carefully and favor lower-lofted clubs. On the finishing holes, tight fairways bordered by thick vegetation reward accuracy and conservative play off the tee, so resist taking unnecessary risks if new to the course.

The Main Challenge

The course’s toughest challenge is the constant wind exposure, most prominent on coastal holes, making club selection and trajectory crucial. Additionally, several holes require approach shots over natural ravines and tight doglegs, with fast, undulating greens adding final tests for golfers of all skill levels.

The Good

Golfers rave about the immersive natural environment and stunning ocean views, with several memorable holes playing toward or alongside Pacific beaches. The wildlife experience is uniquely Costa Rican—playing amid monkeys, iguanas, and exotic birds—while consistently high course maintenance and friendly staff round out an excellent overall experience.

The Not So Good

Some golfers note the bunkers and cart paths could use upgrading in certain locations, and greens can be firm and fast during dry spells. More shaded seating and water stations on extended holes would further enhance comfort during hot, humid afternoons.

15

No items found.

The clubhouse includes restaurant and bar service with local cuisine, lockers, showers, wireless internet, and lounge areas overlooking the course. A pro shop offers apparel and equipment, and staff can assist with tee times and local activity planning. The atmosphere is casual yet upscale.
