Course Report
Holtsmark Golf Club’s set of five par 3s is widely recognized as the best in Scandinavia.
About
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and Bruce Charlton, Holtsmark Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland course in woodland terrain outside Oslo. The course features undulating fairways, large greens and five standout par 3s. Known for its beautiful Scandinavian setting, strategic design, and excellent conditions, Holtsmark is rated among Norway’s best courses and welcomes public play.
Caddie Tip
Accuracy off the tee is vital, especially on the par 3s which are well-defended by bunkers and natural hazards. Avoid going long on approach shots, as many greens are elevated and fall away sharply at the back. Take advantage of the generous fairways, but be wary of misjudging the undulating terrain.
The Main Challenge
Holtsmark’s toughest challenge comes from its large, contoured greens and well-protected pin positions. Many approach shots are to elevated targets with demanding bunkers and undulations, making precise iron play essential. The slopes and frequent woodland hazards require both accurate driving and creative shotmaking.
The Good
Golfers love the tranquil, scenic woodland setting, which immerses you fully in the Norwegian countryside. The standout variety across holes, especially the acclaimed par 3s, and the architectural interest in both long and short holes provide a strategic challenge while showcasing the natural beauty of the area.
The Not So Good
Some visitors note that the undulating terrain can result in slower rounds during busy periods, and occasional maintenance work, particularly on bunkers, has drawn comment. Improved signage and more clubhouse amenities, such as expanded dining options, could further enhance the experience.
