Course Report

Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club is that the land it occupies was originally a U.S. Navy recreational facility during the 1940s, specifically part of the Navy Air Technical Training Center known as "South Base," an annex to the Norman Naval Air Station.

About

Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club, located on the University of Oklahoma campus in Norman, is a Perry Maxwell design that opened in 1951. Known for rolling hills, native grasses, and mature Bur Oaks, the course regularly hosts NCAA events and is considered one of the best collegiate golf venues in the U.S. Renovations have kept the conditioning top-notch year-round.

Caddie Tip

Play conservatively off the tee on holes where native grasses threaten; staying in the fairway is essential as the rough can be penal. Putts tend to break more than you think, and wind is often a major factor on long par 4s—club up, and avoid missing long on approach shots.

The Main Challenge

The toughest aspect of Jimmie Austin is its bunkering and the thick, native rough that penalizes errant shots. The back nine demands exceptional course management, especially in Oklahoma’s frequent winds. The final stretch includes several long par 4s where par feels like a birdie for most.

The Good

Golfers love the overall conditioning and thoughtful design by Perry Maxwell, as well as the challenge presented on every hole. The layout balances strategy and beauty, rewarding smart play while still being fair to all skill levels. Its historic setting and college golf pedigree add to the appeal.

The Not So Good

Some players note that the course can play very tough in windy conditions and wish for more yardage options from forward tees for higher-handicap or newer players, especially given tournament-length roughs and demanding approaches.

#

18

The par-4 18th closes the round with a strong, uphill dogleg left. Framed by tall trees and guarded by bunkers, it demands a strategic tee shot and a precise approach to a protected green below the clubhouse. The finish epitomizes the challenge and grandeur of the layout.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The clubhouse includes a well-stocked pro shop, locker rooms, grill/restaurant, banquet and event space, and friendly staff. Golfers praise the welcoming atmosphere and amenities that cater to both serious and casual players alike.
