Course Report

The course sits on a 1,400-acre site, with three-quarters of the property dedicated to preserved open space and nature trails.

About

Jug Mountain Ranch is a public mountain golf course near McCall, Idaho, designed by Donald Knott. The course provides panoramic views of Jughandle Mountain, weaving through forests, wetlands, and meadows. Known for its natural beauty, variety, and challenge, Jug Mountain Ranch is repeatedly ranked among Idaho’s top public courses, offering a unique mountain golf experience open to all.

Caddie Tip

Prioritize accuracy off the tee; many holes feature subtle doglegs and elevation changes. Pay attention to wind and club selection, especially on approach shots to elevated greens. On the back nine, holes cut through wetlands and forest, so play conservatively if unsure. The greens are large and contoured—aim for the right section on longer putts to avoid three-putting.

The Main Challenge

The course’s biggest test is its demanding second shots and approach play into large, multi-tiered greens that often sit at angles to the fairway. Elevation changes, natural hazards, and mature trees force smart club selection and shot placement. The closing stretch, with its strategic bunkers and water hazards, can make or break a good round.

The Good

Golfers rave about the spectacular mountain setting, with panoramic views of Jughandle Mountain and tranquil natural landscapes throughout the round. The thoughtful routing showcases the land’s variety—open meadows, wooded stretches, and scenic wetlands—while the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere makes it a favorite for locals and visitors alike.

The Not So Good

Some golfers wish for more consistent green speeds during the peak of summer and occasional complaints arise over slow play on busy weekends. Drainage can create softer conditions after heavy rain, sometimes leading to cart restrictions. Expanded food and beverage options at the clubhouse are frequently requested by regular players.
