Course Report
Bobby Jones completed his legendary Grand Slam by winning the 1930 U.S. Amateur at Merion's East Course—a feat that remains one of the greatest moments in golf history.
About
Merion Golf Club’s famed East Course in Ardmore, Pennsylvania was designed by Hugh Wilson and opened in 1912. Consistently ranked among the world's best, Merion (East) features unique bunkering, contoured greens, and tight fairways across 126 acres. The club has hosted numerous major championships, including five U.S. Opens. Players encounter a challenging, cerebral experience that demands precise shot-making.
Caddie Tip
Keep drives in play off the tee and aim for the correct side of fairways, as approaches are extremely angle-dependent. Avoid missing greens long; the heavily contoured putting surfaces penalize aggressive recovery shots. Trust the caddie's local knowledge—Merion's deceptive slopes and hidden trouble can surprise first-timers.
The Main Challenge
The true test at Merion (East) lies in its undulating greens, penal bunkering, and narrow playing corridors. Precision off the tee is vital, but the most demanding aspect is the short game—slopes and green speeds quickly punish missed targets and force creative recoveries.
The Good
Golfers consistently praise the East Course's masterful routing and unrelenting variety. Every hole feels distinct and memorable, and many cherish the authentic tournament atmosphere, storied history, and world-class conditioning. The experience of walking in the footsteps of legends is unmatched.
The Not So Good
Some comment on tight acreage, which leads to close proximity between some holes and limited privacy at times. Flooding can affect lower parts of the course after heavy rain, sometimes impacting playability and turf health. Practice areas are relatively compact compared to newer facilities.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The 18th hole, a par 4, is famous for its demanding tee shot over quarry and the elevated green guarded by bunkers. Ben Hogan's iconic 1-iron approach here vaulted this finishing hole to legend status, immortalized in championship lore. It’s a classic risk-reward closer that remains one of the most memorable finishing holes in America.
Clubhouse
Merion’s historic clubhouse offers classic locker rooms, fine dining, grill rooms, and event spaces steeped in golf tradition. Pro shop, caddie services, lounges, and member amenities maintain a refined and exclusive small-club environment.
Practice Facilities
The club offers putting greens and short-game areas adjacent to both courses. The range is limited in length due to space, but chipping and bunker practice facilities are maintained to high standards. A dedicated staff provides attentive service for player preparation.
