Course Report

The Oshima Course opened in 1928 and was among the first major seaside courses in Japan, helping launch Kawana's reputation as a legendary resort for both golf and natural Japanese hospitality.

About

Kawana Hotel Golf Course (Oshima) is a scenic seaside course designed by Mitsuaki Otani in 1928, often referred to as the father of Japanese golf. Winding along dramatic cliffs above Sagami Bay, the course features intimate, classic routing and vibrant Pacific views. A part of a historic resort, Oshima offers a blend of Japanese design heritage and breathtaking coastal golf experiences.

Caddie Tip

Due to frequent stiff breezes off the Pacific, club selection is often critical—especially on holes routed along the cliffs. On the signature 6th, favor the left side to avoid trouble by the suspension bridge. Approach shots on downhill holes roll out further than expected, so plan your landing areas carefully.

The Main Challenge

Oshima challenges players with blind tee shots, dramatic elevation changes, narrow fairways, and swirling ocean winds. The natural contours make approach shots tricky, and cliffside holes punish errant drives. Success demands accurate navigation and keen club selection, particularly on holes skirting the ocean.

The Good

Golfers rave about the panoramic ocean views and the way the course uses the natural topography to create memorable holes, especially the elevated tees and infinity greens overlooking Sagami Bay. The peaceful resort atmosphere and historical setting add a sense of occasion to every round at Oshima.

The Not So Good

Players often mention the relatively short length of the course (by international standards) and some uneven lies due to the natural terrain. After heavy rain, areas can become soggy and pace of play may slow, with some wishing for expanded English signage and navigator guidance for international guests.

The 6th hole, a par 4, is a memorable highlight due to its suspension bridge tee shot over dramatic terrain and vistas of the Pacific Ocean. This strategic hole demands accuracy on the approach, rewarding players with some of the best views on the course and remains a favorite among guests for its dramatic visual impact and design.
