Course Report

Kebo Valley is the eighth oldest golf course in the United States, and President William Howard Taft famously carded a 27 on the 17th hole during his visit.

About

Kebo Valley Golf Club is one of the oldest courses in the U.S., established in 1888 and expanded by renowned architect Herbert C. Leeds. Nestled at the edge of Acadia National Park, its well-maintained 18-hole, par-70 layout features beautiful scenery and playability. Known for its classic design and tradition, it attracts both locals and visitors to Bar Harbor.

Caddie Tip

Keep approaches below the hole, as greens can be deceptive and run quick, especially when dry. Local knowledge helps with reading subtle breaks. Play conservatively on tight driving holes—errant shots often lead to difficult recoveries due to thick rough and natural hazards.

The Main Challenge

Accuracy and course management are critical due to narrow fairways and frequent elevation changes throughout the round. Native rough, natural hazards, and strategically placed bunkers increase difficulty, particularly in windy conditions common near the Maine coast. The undulating greens demand precise approach shots and confident putting.

The Good

Golfers are consistently drawn to the breathtaking views of the surrounding Acadia National Park, as well as the course’s rich historical charm and traditional design. The layout offers a pleasant blend of challenge and playability, making each round memorable for golfers of all skill levels.

The Not So Good

Some golfers note that the greens, while generally well-maintained, can occasionally become inconsistent later in the season due to high play and weather variations. Improved clubhouse modernization and more extensive practice facilities are also frequently mentioned wishes.

Signature Hole:

#

8

No items found.

The 8th hole, a par 4, is Kebo Valley's most storied hole, set against towering mountains and dramatic scenery. With a slightly elevated tee shot over a valley and a challenging green protected by bunkers, it tests accuracy and club selection, offering spectacular views that embody the course’s connection to Acadia National Park.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The course provides a fully modern clubhouse with a pro shop, daily lunch service, locker rooms, and banquet/event hosting. The clubhouse is a popular gathering spot with scenic views and relaxed dining, available spring through fall.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

While Kebo Valley does not have a driving range, it features a putting green and a short-game area for chipping and pitching, as well as access to a PGA teaching pro. Golf lessons are offered individually and for groups.
