Course Report

Keney Park was among the first courses in Connecticut designed specifically to relieve congestion at the city’s other major public course, Goodwin Park.

About

Keney Park Golf Course, designed by Devereux Emmet (front nine, 1927) and Robert "Jack" Ross (back nine, 1931), is a historic public 18-hole parkland layout in Hartford. Its classic 1920s features and recent renovations deliver a walkable, fun test with varied holes, mature trees, and a solid reputation for friendly service. Ideal for all skill levels with practice facilities and a spacious clubhouse.

Caddie Tip

Keep tee shots straight to avoid mature tree lines. Approach shots need to avoid deep bunkers on several greens, especially on holes 5 and 14. If this is your first round, play conservatively off the tee as the course rewards position over power. Watch for subtle breaks in the greens.

The Main Challenge

Keney Park’s challenge centers on precise tee shots through mature parkland corridors, especially on the demanding par 4s. Greens have subtle undulations that require careful reading. Back-nine holes demand distance control and bunker avoidance. Lengthy rough and tree lines penalize errant shots, rewarding strategic play.

The Good

Golfers praise the course’s classic design, walkability, and friendly atmosphere. The tree-lined fairways and variety of holes create an engaging round, and recent renovations have vastly improved conditions and clubhouse hospitality. Affordable rates and a welcoming staff make Keney Park a favorite for locals and visitors.

The Not So Good

Some golfers cite slow greens on busy days and wish for more consistent bunker maintenance. Weekend pace can lag due to popularity, and the practice area, while functional, could benefit from expanded amenities. Drainage has improved, but heavy rains can still affect conditions in low spots.

Signature Hole:

#

5

No items found.

Hole 5 is a challenging par 4 featuring a long dogleg with mature trees flanking both sides. The fairway requires accuracy off the tee, and a well-placed approach shot to a well-bunkered green is critical for scoring. The beauty and strategic challenge make it a favorite among regulars and visitors.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The clubhouse includes a well-stocked pro shop, spacious locker rooms, and The Tavern at Keney Park restaurant. The clubhouse hosts events and provides excellent food and beverage service. Indoor seating offers course views, and tournament hosting is available. ADA compliant and welcoming to all.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

Keney Park offers a driving range, pitching/chipping area, putting green, and lessons from a teaching pro. Facilities are spacious and well maintained, though the range is geared more toward warmup than full-length practice sessions. On-site rental clubs are available.
