Course Report

La Iguana is set within a rainforest and is home to more than 150 types of birds, as well as monkeys that can be seen and heard during the round.

About

La Iguana Golf Course, designed by Ted Robinson Sr. in 1999, is an 18-hole, par-72 resort layout nestled in Costa Rica’s exotic rainforest near Playa Herradura. The course features ocean views, abundant local wildlife, and a naturally challenging routing. The design incorporates native plants, bananas, orchids, monkeys, and over 150 bird species, offering a unique Costa Rican golf experience.

Caddie Tip

Course strategy focuses on accuracy over distance due to narrow fairways lined by jungle. Beware the penalty for missing fairways left or right, especially on holes 4 and 8. Play conservatively off the tee and factor in shifting coastal breezes. Approach shots need precision; the greens have subtle breaks influenced by the ocean and surrounding jungle.

The Main Challenge

The greatest test is navigating narrow fairways set hard against dense rainforest, where errant shots are punished by lost balls and tricky recovery lies. Elevated greens, water hazards, and shifting breezes off the nearby ocean combine for a strategic, demanding round that tests shot selection and patience.

The Good

Golfers rave about the immersive jungle experience, stunning ocean vistas, and abundance of wildlife including monkeys and exotic birds. The scenery and ambiance make for a uniquely Costa Rican round, with peaceful rainforest surroundings that create a memorable escape from typical resort courses.

The Not So Good

Some players note slow pace during peak resort periods and would like improved bunkers and tee box conditions during the rainy season. Occasional wet spots and ball loss in dense jungle rough are frequent mentions. Additional on-course refreshments and signage could enhance the overall playing experience.
