Course Report

The Woodlands was built in the 1980s to provide a distinct, modern complement to Lawsonia’s historic Links course and features water hazards on 11 of its holes, a rarity for the region.

About

Lawsonia’s Woodlands Course, designed by Rocky Roquemore in 1983, winds through dense Wisconsin hardwoods and dramatic elevation changes near Green Lake. Known for narrow fairways, strategic shot-making, and water in play on 11 holes, it delivers a secluded, immersive 'up north' parkland experience. The course contrasts with its famous Links sibling, offering a more technical, tree-lined test.

Caddie Tip

Off the tee, accuracy is more important than distance—favor conservative lines to the corners and play to the wider side of fairways. On the par 3 3rd, take an extra club for the downhill shot, especially when the wind is swirling. Leave approaches below the hole wherever possible, as the greens have subtle but tricky slopes.

The Main Challenge

The toughest features are the tightly tree-lined fairways and frequent blind shots that reward only well-placed tee balls. Numerous water hazards on over half the holes and several forced carries put a premium on precision. The course’s elevation changes demand smart club selection and course management, especially in windy conditions.

The Good

Golfers rave about the Woodlands’ quiet, secluded routing through thick hardwood forests, the ever-changing elevation, and the feeling of privacy on almost every hole. The variety of holes and strong risk-reward opportunities keep shotmakers engaged all round. Its dramatic terrain and the mix of doglegs, water, and elevation are consistently praised.

The Not So Good

The most common complaints concern overly narrow fairways and dense tree lines that punish even modest misses, creating a sometimes claustrophobic feel. Following significant tree removal in recent years, the underbrush can remain punishing, and some players wish for more width, improved pace, and more vantages of scenic Green Lake.

Signature Hole:

#

3

No items found.

The par 3 3rd is widely considered the signature hole, played steeply downhill through tall trees with a dramatic view of Green Lake off to the right. The approach demands precise distance control to hold a green protected front and back, with elevation and swirling winds upping the challenge. The sweeping vista of forest and water is unforgettable.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The clubhouse features a well-stocked pro shop, locker rooms, Langford’s Pub with food and drinks, and outdoor patios with countryside views. Friendly staff, on-course food and beverage service, and gathering spaces make it a welcoming, laid-back spot to relax before or after your round.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

Lawsonia offers a full driving range, dedicated short game area, and practice putting greens convenient to both courses. The range is grass tee, spacious, and usually in good condition, making warm-ups before your round easy and pleasant.
