Course Report

The Classic at Madden’s was designed in-house by its longtime superintendent, Scott Hoffmann, rather than a famous golf architect. It has frequently featured in Golf Digest's Top 100 public courses.

About

The Classic at Madden's on Gull Lake is a championship, tour-quality course designed by superintendent Scott Hoffmann. Known for its challenging design, immaculate conditions, and playability for all levels, The Classic is consistently ranked among the Midwest's top public courses. The layout winds through mature forest, marshes, and lakes, offering a scenic and memorable round in Minnesota’s north woods.

Caddie Tip

Focus on positioning over power, as strategic shot placement is key to scoring well. Pay close attention to the slick, undulating greens—staying below the hole will often leave easier putts. The par 5s reward conservative play, but experienced golfers can take risks for birdie chances.

The Main Challenge

The greatest challenge at The Classic is managing the slick, sloping greens and frequent forced carries over water or marshland. Many holes demand precise drives and approaches, with substantial risk/reward opportunities—especially on the par 5s and the short par 4s guarded by deep bunkers and water features.

The Good

Players consistently praise the course’s pristine conditions, large rolling greens, and beautiful mature-woodland setting. The routing provides memorable holes with risk/reward opportunities and variety, as well as a peaceful, secluded feel throughout the round. Service staff and on-course amenities are also frequently highlighted.

The Not So Good

Some feel the green fee is expensive compared to other Midwest options, and the difficulty can punish less experienced players. When busy, pace of play can exceed 4.5 hours, and some golfers mention bunkers and rough being especially penal in high season.

Signature Hole:

#

11

No items found.

The short par 4 11th is one of the most photographed and challenging holes. Players must navigate a collection of bunkers clustered tightly around the green—four in front and five behind—demanding precision off the tee and with approach shots. Bold golfers may try for the green, but smart play rewards placement and strategy.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The clubhouse features a full-service restaurant and bar, locker rooms, pro shop, and outdoor patio with lake views. Guests enjoy attentive service, quality dining, and a welcoming lounge— making it a favorite for both pre- and post-round relaxation.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

The Classic offers a full driving range, spacious putting greens, and a short game practice area. Golfers can expect a well-equipped pro shop, club fittings, and personalized instruction. Facilities are modern, well-maintained, and cater to all practice needs.
