Course Report
Greywalls is renowned for its use of exposed quartzite outcroppings and indigenous boulders that define many holes, making it feel carved from the wild Upper Peninsula landscape.
About
Greywalls at Marquette Golf Club, designed by Mike DeVries, is acclaimed for its dramatic natural setting with exposed rock, bold elevation changes, and panoramic Lake Superior views. Opened in 2005, it quickly became one of Michigan's top golf destinations. Greywalls is both visually striking and strategically demanding, challenging players with unique shot values and a rugged, pristine Upper Peninsula feel.
Caddie Tip
Position is key: when in doubt, prioritize fairway over distance, especially from uneven stances. The greens feature substantial undulations, so take extra time to carefully read putts and be wary of leaving approach shots above the hole, as recovery can be difficult on quick downhill putts.
The Main Challenge
Greywalls’ greatest challenge is its combination of topography and natural hazards: frequent elevation shifts, rugged outcroppings, and narrow landing zones demand careful club selection and course management. The fast, undulating greens reward thoughtful approaches but punish any missteps, creating constant mental and physical tests.
The Good
Golfers rave about Greywalls’ exhilarating natural setting, with enormous rock outcroppings, dramatic elevation changes, and expansive Lake Superior views. The routing delivers visual interest and variety at nearly every hole, creating a memorable and immersive golf experience that showcases the Upper Peninsula’s rugged beauty.
The Not So Good
Players sometimes note that the course’s dramatic terrain can lead to blind shots and difficult walks between holes, occasionally causing slow play and challenging navigation. Some wish for expanded signage and slightly improved conditioning of the more remote fairways during peak transitions.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The par 4 18th hole is a striking closer, playing downhill with breathtaking views over Lake Superior framed by exposed rock and forests. Offering multiple lines off the tee, the approach requires precise distance control to a green guarded by natural hazards. It is the perfect finale, combining Greywalls’ unique terrain and visuals into a memorable and demanding finish.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse features a comfortable bar and full-service restaurant with panoramic mountain and course views, locker rooms, and a pro shop. After golf, guests frequently gather for meals and drinks to relax and recount highlights of their round.
Practice Facilities
The club offers a specialized practice range with multiple hitting areas, dedicated chipping and putting greens, and an area for bunker play. These facilities are well-maintained and accessible to visitors before their rounds for full warmups.
