Course Report
Course #1 was used as a parking lot for the 2012 Ryder Cup before being dramatically redesigned by Tom Doak, transforming its reputation and playability.
About
Medinah Country Club Course #1 was originally designed by Tom Bendelow and completely renovated by Tom Doak in 2015. Featuring strategic bunkering, varied par 3s and 5s, and a blend of parkland and open terrain, the course delivers exceptional design and playing experiences for members. Its routing makes excellent use of water hazards and provides wide fairways for all skill levels.
Caddie Tip
Focus on attacking wider fairways while paying careful attention to water hazards, especially on approach shots. The par 3s offer scoring opportunities, but don’t underestimate green undulation—a conservative strategy can help avoid big numbers on closing holes.
The Main Challenge
Flooding and water hazards across the flatter terrain present challenges, especially in wet weather. Greens feature subtle breaks, and closing holes demand precision off the tee and accurate approaches to avoid bunkers and water.
The Good
Golfers love the strategic variety and forgiving tee shots, as well as the beautifully renovated bunkering and green complexes from Tom Doak’s design. Members appreciate that Course #1 delivers comfortable playability while still providing a challenge for better players.
The Not So Good
Some golfers wish for greater challenge or architectural distinction compared to its highly acclaimed sister Course #3. Drainage and water management have been improved, but heavy rains can still leave parts of the course soft or damp in season.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The 18th hole, a challenging par 4, plays back toward the iconic Medinah clubhouse. With strategic bunkering and water hazards guarding the approach, it requires precision and confidence to finish the round. The green is well-protected, making for a memorable closing hole in both beauty and difficulty.
Clubhouse
Historic Arabic-style clubhouse, full locker rooms, dining rooms, lounges, pro shop, banquet spaces, and fitness center. Members enjoy extensive social spaces and personalized services year-round.
Practice Facilities
Large practice range with multiple target greens, putting and short game areas. The club also provides indoor golf simulators, dedicated instruction facilities, and seasonal junior clinics.
