Course Report

The course was built on land formerly used as a farm plantation for a mental institution known as Cain's Colony, and the University of Alabama golf teams use it as their home course.

About

Ol’ Colony Golf Complex is a public, Jerry Pate–designed 18-hole championship course in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Opened in 2000, it stretches over 7,500 yards with over 70 bunkers and 25 acres of lakes, providing a challenging parkland layout. Known for its excellent Bermuda grass conditions, it’s a favorite among locals and a home course for The University of Alabama.

Caddie Tip

Conservative course management is rewarded—play for the wide parts of fairways and give the many water hazards and bunkers plenty of respect. The greens are quick and contoured, so aim for the middle and focus on solid lag putting to avoid three-putts.

The Main Challenge

Ol’ Colony tests every aspect of your game. Length and water hazards put a premium on accuracy off the tee, while the fast, undulating Bermuda greens challenge your short game and putting. Strategic bunkers demand precise club selection and shot shaping throughout.

The Good

Golfers love the strategic design by Jerry Pate, which blends natural water features, mature trees, and dramatic bunkering throughout the layout. The well-maintained Bermuda turf ensures a consistently high-quality playing surface, and the practice facilities are considered some of the best in the state.

The Not So Good

Some players mention that the course can play very long and challenging for higher handicappers, particularly from the back tees, making the round less accessible for some. Occasional slow play can occur during peak times, and wet conditions may lead to cart restrictions.
