Course Report

Ombria Golf Club achieved GEO Foundation certification, one of golf’s most prestigious sustainability ecolabels, recognizing its commitment to preserving the region’s unique ecology and integrating the course within centuries-old olive and carob groves.

About

Ombria Golf Club, designed by Jorge Santana da Silva and opened in 2023, is a par 71, 18-hole course set amongst rolling hills and ancient rivers in the Algarve. Noted for its sustainable design and GEO Foundation certification, the course blends seamlessly into the natural landscape, offering a memorable and eco-conscious golf experience with modern amenities.

Caddie Tip

The course layout rewards accuracy over power—focus on careful club selection off the tee and try to keep your approach shots below the hole to avoid tricky downhill putts. On the back nine, elevation changes and swirling breezes demand extra attention for both distance control and course management.

The Main Challenge

Ombria’s greatest challenge is the variety of elevation changes and closely integrated natural hazards, including rivers and well-placed bunkers. Shot accuracy and course management are essential, especially on the undulating back nine where tricky pin placements and erratic winds can increase the difficulty.

The Good

Golfers rave about the natural integration of the course into the Algarve’s beautiful rolling valleys and ancient farmland, offering a serene experience punctuated by native flora, soothing rivers, and panoramic vistas. The tranquil environment makes every round feel like an unplugged retreat into nature.

The Not So Good

Some guests mention the course’s buggy-only policy as a downside for players who prefer to walk. A few also note that portions of the young turf may need a bit more maturity to reach the level of established Algarve classics after the course’s 2023 debut.
