Course Report

Patagonia Virgin Golf Club is the first Nicklaus Design golf course in Chile and is frequently ranked as the best course in the country.

About

Patagonia Virgin Golf Club, designed by Nicklaus Design, sits 450 feet above Llanquihue Lake in southern Chile’s Los Lagos region. Combining links-style holes with dramatic forested layouts, this visually captivating private course features wide fairways, ancient native trees, stunning views, and state-of-the-art practice facilities. Opened in 2015, it is regarded as the premier golf destination in Chile.

Caddie Tip

The elevation changes are significant—trust yardages but club up on uphill approaches. Wind can be unpredictable, especially on the exposed lakeside holes. Play to the wide parts of fairways and aim for the safe side of greens, as greens are well protected and contours can be challenging for putts above the hole.

The Main Challenge

The toughest challenge is the diverse routing: open, windswept links-style holes can play long and exposed, while the forested side features tight drives, dramatic elevation changes, and undulating greens. Club selection is critical, and errant shots are often punished by native trees or penal bunkering.

The Good

Golfers rave about the spectacular vistas overlooking Lake Llanquihue and the volcanoes, as well as the unique blend of wide, open holes and challenging forest-lined routing. The natural landscape maintains a pristine feel, and the Nicklaus design offers strategic interest for both high and low handicappers.

The Not So Good

Some players note that completion of all 18 holes and further development of facilities would elevate the experience. During rainy months, fairway drainage can be an issue, and off-season maintenance sometimes lags, leading to slower greens and softer turf.
