Course Report
Ghost Creek hosted the inaugural Nike Tour Championship in 1993 and helped launch the professional careers of golf legends, including a major win by Tiger Woods on its sister course during his legendary U.S. Amateur run.
About
Ghost Creek at Pumpkin Ridge is a par-71, 6,839-yard public golf course northwest of Portland, Oregon, designed by Bob Cupp. Set in natural Portland wetlands and framed by mature trees with dramatic mountain vistas, the course has hosted several major tournaments and is known for its classic design, playability, and challenge for all skill levels.
Caddie Tip
Pay close attention to the wetland areas on several holes—errant shots can find trouble quickly. Many greens have subtle breaks and tend to run true but fast; carefully read putts, especially on downhill lines. Play conservatively off the tee when water is prominent and prioritize accuracy over distance.
The Main Challenge
The biggest challenge is navigating the wetland carries and strategically placed natural hazards, with Ghost Creek itself winding through many holes. Accuracy is crucial off the tee and in approaches, especially with greens protected by water or deep bunkers, demanding precise shot-making throughout the round.
The Good
Most golfers praise the natural wetland setting—lush, scenic, and tranquil—and the variety of memorable holes. The course offers a strong mix of strategic challenge, playability, and beauty, with standout conditioning, engaging greens, and a fun layout that encourages return play.
The Not So Good
Some golfers find the pace of play can be slow during peak times, and the wetland terrain means certain holes may have soggy conditions after rain. Others mention that the high demand for public tee times occasionally impacts course access and cart availability.
Signature Hole:
#
9
The par-4 ninth hole is renowned at Ghost Creek, featuring a challenging approach over wetlands to a guarded green, framed by trees and the ever-present creek. Notably, the hole served as a pivotal stage during the 1993 Nike Tour Championship, where David Duval won with a comeback despite a double bogey on this tough par 4.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse provides a comfortable restaurant and bar, locker rooms, event spaces, and a golf shop with equipment and apparel. It’s a welcoming base for public golfers, with attentive service and relaxing post-round areas overlooking parts of the course.
Practice Facilities
Ghost Creek offers full practice amenities, including a spacious driving range, large putting green, and short game areas. The facilities accommodate warm-ups and skill improvement for all levels and are complemented by nearby teaching pros and well-stocked golf shop resources.
