Course Report
The Raven was originally called Hawthorne Valley and portions of the course were first cleared by coal miners before Gary Player’s team transformed it into one of the most acclaimed mountain layouts in West Virginia.
About
Raven Golf Club at Snowshoe Mountain, designed by Gary Player in 1993, is a striking mountain course famed for dramatic elevation changes, tree-lined fairways, and stunning scenery. The par-72 layout features challenging greens and a dynamic routing through beautiful terrain that tests all skill levels while delivering memorable mountain golf experiences.
Caddie Tip
Bring plenty of golf balls and club up on the tricky uphill par 3s—elevation and swirling mountain winds often play havoc with distance judgment. Pay special attention to approach shots as the greens are well-defended and putting from above the hole can be treacherous due to the slope and green speed.
The Main Challenge
The combination of dramatic elevation changes and tight, tree-lined fairways creates constant tests of shot selection and distance control. Several forced carries, sloping lies, and well-bunkered greens make the layout demanding from tee to green, especially when winds pick up in the afternoon.
The Good
Golfers consistently praise the spectacular mountain views from elevated tees and the variety of holes that make use of the terrain. The strong conditioning and dramatic layout, combined with the peaceful setting away from the crowds, make each round feel like a special experience.
The Not So Good
Some players note that pace of play can slow down during busy periods due to the challenging terrain and increased use of carts. Hole signage and navigation between sections can also be a bit confusing, especially for first-timers, and the mountain weather can quickly shift playability.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The 18th hole is a par 5 finishing hole that plays dramatically downhill toward the clubhouse, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. With a sweeping fairway and a challenging approach into a well-guarded green, it’s a memorable closer that leaves a lasting impression and rewards bold, accurate play.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse features golf shop, locker rooms, grill and bar with patio views, and a welcoming atmosphere for post-round dining. Rental clubs, shoe service, and golf packages with the Snowshoe resort are available through the pro shop.
Practice Facilities
The club offers a full driving range with natural grass tees, target greens, and a short game area for wedge and bunker practice. A spacious putting green helps players prepare for the quick, undulating bentgrass surfaces they’ll encounter during play.
